October 1, 2008. A Special Tribute: Houstonians Unite.
Hurricane Ike blew through the City of Houston with ferocity in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 13, 2008.
In less than twelve hours, her wrath was felt here and in an area covering hundreds of miles to the north, south, east,
and west. We must pray for our neighbors to the south in the Galveston, Bolivar Peninsula area that sustained
substantial damage to their coastline's topography, residences, and businesses.
What a large percentage of Houstonians experienced was devastation caused by two commodities: electrical power and
our lush vegetation Houston is known for. Mother Nature did not discriminate as the damage she wreaked proved to
be of such enormity that we are still weeks later addressing items in need of repair or damaged.
What I thought was also of enormous magnitude was the spirit and determination of Houstonians to rebuild and restore.
I viewed people helping people, neighbors helping neighbors.
I saw electrical extension
cords lay across streets to share electricity with their neighbors across. I saw people delivering hot food
to their neighbors still without power so that they could enjoy a nice meal. I saw children raking leaves and debris
off their neighbors' yards. People of all walks of life reached out to help one another. The hospitality I observed was awesome to see
after all the devastation.
This is why I love Houston. It's the people. And this is why so many people numbering in the millions have made this fabulous city their home. If
